1. طال الليل واظلما

    قتل الليل أرقما

    The night grew long and dark.

    May the night be slain—that speckled serpent!

  2. بات جفني مؤرقاً

    غربه يمطر الدما

    My eyelid spent the night sleepless,

    Its tears raining blood.

  3. فارق الارض لحظه

    وأعتلى يطلب السما

    Its gaze left the earth

    And rose aloft, seeking the sky.

  4. كلما اجتاز أنجماً

    راح يرتاد أنجما

    Whenever it passed some stars,

    It went in search of more stars.

  5. رب سر مكتم

    لم نجده مكتما

    Many a closely guarded secret

    We found it did not conceal.

  6. حفظ السر كله

    فإذا شئت ترجما

    It retained the secret in full;

    Then, if you wished, it interpreted it.

  7. رحم الله مهجة

    لم تجد منه أرحما

    May God have mercy on a soul

    That found none more merciful than Him.

  8. ابدأ تذكر الحمى

    آه من ذكرها الحمى

    Begin remembering the homeland.

    Ah, for its remembrance of the homeland!

  9. أيها الناس مالكم

    تبغضون الميتما

    O people, what is wrong with you,

    That you hate the orphaned one?

  10. اتركوه يجد له

    جنة أو جهنما

    Leave him to find for himself

    A paradise or a hell.
