People desire happiness in this world,
People seek happiness in this life
But time refuses to bestow it.
Yet time refuses to be generous with them

وجد حاربوهُ منذ كانوا
A life that has fought them since it began,
Life has fought them since it began
And fortune they have fought since they came to be.
And since they began, they fought it back

وأحداث تكذبها سمانُ
And lean hopes deceive them,
Vain hopes mislead them
And fat events give those hopes the lie.
While events belie their thoughts

And how many who seek help are not helped!
Many who plead find no comfort

Worries have multiplied; no reed pen
Cares have multiplied, but no one pays heed
Can do them justice in lament, nor can any tongue.
Neither complaints nor tongues can meet them

Quarter, O hostile adversary!
I grant you safety, oh hostile adversary
When foes submit, quarter must be granted.
When hostility ends, safety is a right

لقد هانت رغائبهم وهانوا
If they appeal to you, you turn away from them;
If they seek you, I have turned from them
Their wishes have grown worthless indeed, and so have they.
Their desires are despised, and so are they

ألا كذبوا على بعض ومانوا
People hold out hopes of good to one another;
People wish each other well in words
Indeed, they have lied to one another and spoken falsely.
Alas, they have lied and betrayed one another

For good has no season in this world,
Goodness has no place in this life
Nor does good have a season in the next.
Nor any place in the next life

For nights [reading uncertain], then balking follows it.
Followed by regrets and sorrows

زماناً ثم يسترخي العنان
A firm judgment tightens its reins
It gives freedom to its whims
For a time; then the reins grow slack.
Then pulls in the reins when older

And a caller came inviting me to counsel,
A moralist came to advise me
Though reason had weakened and my fingertips grown feeble.
But advice and admonitions have become weak

لبث النصح نظم أو بيانُ
I am weary of speaking; nothing is of use
I am tired of words, for they are useless
For spreading counsel—neither verse nor eloquence.
Advice in prose or verse is fruitless

It was a folly, and I turned away from it;
I have lost my way and abandoned it
So here I am: I neither condemn nor am condemned.
Now I judge no one and am judged by none

My sorrow is not for an age gone by,
I regret no covenant I violated
But that I kept a covenant that no one keeps.
But I kept a covenant that could not be kept

I wronged a loyal friend for many long years
And I used to think I would not be betrayed.
Thinking myself beyond reproach

The coward summoned up his courage in vain
It hailed her, and she answered the spearpoint.

By your life, there is no place for one who counsels,
What use is good advice in such a place?
Nor for counsel is there a place in this world.
Goodness has no place in this life

So leave me be, if my hopes suffice me
For I have my concern, and the counselors have theirs.
I have my own affairs, and advisors have theirs
