أماis there not لحزنto a sorrow بتI have dwelt فيهin it انقضاءan end
How long will the eye weep? The weeping has lasted long.
Until the eye ceases to weep, weeping continues
Is there no end to the sorrow in which I dwell?
As if the sadness in which it ends has no end

You have betrayed me, O Time, you have betrayed me.
O time, you have betrayed me, you have betrayed me
I did not think you so lacking in loyalty.
I did not think you were so little loyal

If I reveal my plight, recounting it wearies me;
If enumerating my possessions could help me
Or if I conceal it, it grows through this concealment.
Or hiding them would lessen this concealment

My hopes have died, though I have not yet died.
My hopes have died and when they died
I live, then, for despair, not for hope.
I lived for despair, not for hope

I have come to reject all that I hope for.
I have become reluctant towards all I desire
Far from it! Acceptance is not like refusal.
Alas! There is no satisfaction like acceptance

How can I console my heart for what has passed?
Woe to a heart that has no solace.
Woe to a heart that has no consolation

I have kept calling a people to guidance;
I continued to call a group to guidance
They went astray, and prolonged appeals have still availed nothing.
But they went astray, so my long call was fruitless

My call was lost when I called them
Had I not been lost, that call would not have been lost.
If I had not wasted it, that call would not have been lost

Wherever you go you will find a sinner
One weeping, one making others weep, and one refusing to weep.
Crying, weeping, and reluctant to weep

In God's keeping are men who have died;
There are men in God's care who have passed away
Long have they dwelt beneath the graves.
Long has the ground been their shelter

My oppressor wronged me between the two;
My oppressors have wronged me between them
And it was enough that he did wrong between them.
And it was enough evil to wrong me between them
