    Farewell, O august king.

A journey draws near, and the way is prepared.

The noble mounts will carry you toward a realm

Like this realm, but one that never passes away.

And a throne that death cannot ascend,

And a crown above your head that never tilts.

Can this face be overtaken by fading?

Yes—and flowers, too, are overtaken by fading.

    وإن كثير أدمعها قليل

    Ah, let the eyes of the heights weep for him;

And even their plentiful tears are few.

Indeed, lofty honors played music for him yesterday,

And today their melody is wailing.

I heard the cannons of grief booming,

So I said to my companions, 'Momentous news!'

And I saw the banners lowered,

Shrinking in the air and stretching out,

Fluttering like consciences in their sorrow,

As though their masts were lifting them aloft.

And I felt their red patches had wiped away tears

That had begun to stream down some cheeks.

    لأمر ما تعجلك الرحيل

    Gently, O departing cortege;

For some reason, departure has hurried you.

You journey with one whom hopes escort

To his resting place, and whom minds follow.

Pass through the palaces of glory until

His most enduring palace is reached.

And roam with the bier through a realm's reaches,

As its occupant once used to roam.

The soul's burning thirst, that thirst would be quenched.

And here a pyramid and the Nile answered it.

And at the sea's gate, the surging waters dried up,

And the land lay through the night, its plains streaming over it.

    There, the swimming vessels sigh,

And there, the racing horses neigh.

Burning griefs are alike in their hidden depths,

Even when their outward forms differ.

Indeed, a calamity that befell mankind has appalled them,

And no wonder, for this is an appalling calamity.

    Edward died, leaving deep-rooted glory,

And after him that deep-rooted glory remains.

By doubt's black nights, and the guide grows bewildered.

Like the garden's flowers, bowed by withering.

God's peace, O Edward, from us

Be upon you; and now, patience is beautiful.
