طابَ يَومي وَلَذَّ شُربُ السُلافَه

طابَ يَومي وَلَذَّ شُربُ السُلافَه

إِذ أَتاني نَعِيُّ مَن بِالرُصافَه

إِذ أَتاني نَعِيُّ مَن بِالرُصافَه

My day was pleasant, and drinking choice wine was sweet,

When news reached me of the death of the one at al-Ruṣāfa.

وَأَتانا البَريدُ يَنعى هِشاماً

وَأَتانا البَريدُ يَنعى هِشاماً

وَأَتانا بِخاتَمٍ لِلخِلافَه

وَأَتانا بِخاتَمٍ لِلخِلافَه

And the courier came to us, announcing Hishām’s death,

And brought us a signet ring of the caliphate.

فَاِصطَحَبنا مِن خَمرِعانَةَ صِرفاً

فَاِصطَحَبنا مِن خَمرِعانَةَ صِرفاً

وَلَهَونا بِقَينَةٍ عَزّافَه

وَلَهَونا بِقَينَةٍ عَزّافَه

So we took along some unmixed wine of ʿĀna,

And made merry with a singing girl skilled at playing music.
