    May God let me see you, Salma, throughout my life,

    and on the Day of Reckoning, just as I see you now.

    Will you not reward one you have enthralled for a lifetime,

    one who, were you to summon him, would surely come to you?

    وَإِن يُنسَأ لَهُ أَجَلٌ بَكاكِ

    One who, if you died, would die—may you never die—

    and, were his appointed end deferred, would mourn you;

    إِذاً ذاقَ المَماتَ وَما عَصاكِ

    one who, if you said, “Die,” and dying lay within his power,

    would taste death then and never disobey you;

    and one who truly, if granted all he wished for

    in all the wide earth, would choose none but you?

    Reward this love-mad, impassioned, tormented man,

    who, whenever his leg grew numb, would call your name.
