That is not the character of free men; rather—
The march of the free, that one, and yet
by God, that is the nature of thieves.
By God that is the nature of thieves

What honor is there in a conscience stained
Where is the chivalry from a conscience dyed
with pure blood that raced toward the heights?
With the pure blood of the foremost climbers

These gallows, in truth, were nothing
These gallows were not in truth
but stairways of honor for the climber.
But steps of glory for the rising one

We, the unbowed believers, proclaim it,
We steadfast believers say it
even if death’s cup is filled to overflowing.
Even if the cup of death is in gulping

For glory is not won through applause
For glory is not attained with applause
by a people, but through blood poured out.
By a people, but with spilled blood

And indeed we have loved glory along with its trials;
And we loved glory with its afflictions
how sweet is affliction to lovers!
How sweet are afflictions for lovers

O company of martyrs, blessed was your death;
O group of martyrs, your death was good
it was sweeter to you than the antidote.
It was more delicious for you than syrup

By God, better guides for us than our own eyelashes
By God, from our eyelids a guide guided us
you were indeed—to light and the vindication of truth.
You were for the light and the truth

And if hardships have torn us apart,
And if hardships separated what was between us
then we shall meet in the gardens of bliss.
For us is the Gardens of Bliss for reunion
