  1. من كان يرضى بذّل في ولايته

    خوف الزوال فاني لست بالراضي

    Whoever would accept humiliation in his governorship

    For fear of losing it—I am not one to accept it.

  2. قالوا فتركب أحياناً فقلت لهم

    تحت الصليب ولا في موكب القاضي

    They said, “Then ride out sometimes.” I said to them:

    “Beneath the cross, but not in the judge’s procession.”
