Spare me, you two, the ruins of Burqat Thahmad,

And do not mention life in the desert of Arbad.

For I have no longing for Najd and its people,

Nor do I yearn for Umm Ma'bad.

A dwelling of misery: life is not dear

There, nor is a noble man's living any easier.

What drew me away from it, in Damascus and among its people,

Were springtime haunts where life is not wretched.

Where the breeze of the two Ghoutas is perfumed

With the breaths of blossoms scattered in the gardens.

It passes over what is sweeter in scent than musk,

And flows over water colder than snow.
