باللَه صفه ولا تنقص ولا تزد

"By God, describe him; neither subtract nor add."

فقال أبصرته لو مات من ظمأ

وقلت قف لا ترد للماء لم يرد

It replied, "I saw him: even were he dying of thirst,

I saw him, had he died of thirst, I said

and I said, 'Stop! Do not go to the water,' he would not go."

Stop! Turn not back for water! On he sped

قالت صدقت الوفا في الحبّ عادته

قالت صدقت الوفا في الحبّ عادته

يا برد ذاك الذي قالت على كبدي

يا برد ذاك الذي قالت على كبدي

She said, "You spoke truly; faithfulness in love is his habit."

True, constancy in love was his custom

Oh, how cooling to my liver was what she said!

O coolness, that which she said on my heart
