    If I acquired enough gold to cover the earth,

    I would find in it no substitute for nearness to you.

    I parted from you, unaware of what parting from you held,

    So I tasted anguish from the burning heat of distance from you.

    بل ليتني كنت من قبل النوى حرضا

    If only I had never known you;

    Rather, if only I had been wasting away before our separation.

    For if hardship or grief could end a life,

    I would be among those who died of grief and passed away.
