وأقنع أن أهدي السلام مع الركب
I yearn for loved ones and the spacious dwelling,
I yearn for friends and a spacious home
and am content to send greetings with the caravan.
And I am content to send my greetings with the caravan

إلى بلد الأهواز عن بلد العرب
Were it not for the pursuit of honor, I would not have journeyed
Were it not for seeking glory I would not have departed
to the land of Ahwaz, away from the land of the Arabs.
To the land of Ahvaz from the land of Arabs

وأهجر أرض الخصب والذل في الخصب
I settle in barren lands while they are honored,
I settled in barren lands though they are dear
and forsake fertile land when humiliation lies in its plenty.
And I abandoned fertile soil though humiliation lies in fertility

And I have always had a Nasiri resolve,
My ambitious spirit has not flagged
divided into two halves, between earnestness and play:
Divided halfway between earnestness and play

one half consumed by eminence and its pursuit,
Half my mind is bent on knowledge and its pursuit
and one half by passionate yearning and love.
Half is concerned with youth and love

And I have a beloved whose beauty makes me whole,
In beauty lies my dwelling, that splits my anxiety
and rends my heart with avoidance and reproach.
And rips my heart with avoidance and reproach

وقد جاد وشك البعد لي منه بالقرب
Whatever I forget, I will not forget the day we parted,
I cannot forget, I cannot forget our day of parting
when impending separation bestowed his nearness upon me,
When the pain of separation flowed copiously from its nearness

When we embraced at the farewell, but in truth
clasping, from longing's excess, my heart to my heart.
I pressed my heart to my heart from an excess of passion

Oh, if only imminent parting had granted an hour's respite,
Oh if only the pain of separation had delayed an hour
in which my desire for him might be fulfilled and my life ended.
It passed and my love passed away with it

So whoever is like me has divided affections,
So one who was like me shared a common passion
so all the likelier you will find his mind divided.
And was more deserving to meet with a shared affection

His eyes shine eastward with tears
and its torrent of tears flows for the dweller in the West.
While the west flows to the inhabitant of the west

And that which I spent was better than earnings

Necessity called me in my estrangement
for its sake I set my soul upon a restive mount.
I carried myself upon a difficult voyage

وأنكج أخت التغلبيين في جنب
Absence from his homeland humbled Imru' al-Qays,
The estrangement of his homeland humiliated Imru al-Qais
and [married off] the Taghlibites' sister among Janb.
And anguished the sister of the Taghlib in her side

While my ribs are torn by passion
am indeed [more patient] than an old camel with scabs upon its flank.
There is no patience in a reed bent sidewards

And when calamities come I become its elder
