المرء وقت له تناه

مقدر طوله وعرضه

مقدر طوله وعرضه

A person is a span of time with an end,

A man has a finite time

Its length and breadth predetermined.

With length and breadth foretold

فكلما مرّ عنه يوم

فكلما مرّ عنه يوم

فانّما مرّ منه بعضه

فانّما مرّ منه بعضه

So whenever a day passes him by,

And when a day goes by for him

It is but a part of him that has passed away.

Merely some part slips by, less whole
