Indeed, He who poured upon Lebanon, from

His highest paradise, His choicest beauty,

by crystal, bursting forth across its robe.

And alight upon it, casting off the garment of sickness,

between the bend's wild lote trees and their shade.

And take off your sandals before treading its soil,

for Lebanon's soil is the mortal remains of its men.

spreading over the dust of its generations.

My soul is ransom for the mountain; I cannot consent

to their burying my bones anywhere but in its shade,

and I may pass the night with its clear water's murmur for company.

Do you not see how holy its breaths are,

turning an old man's life away from its appointed end?

Restore to his hand the reins of his affairs,

Paris—that is the true meaning of his independence.
