Were it not for my love of you, I would not have returned a greeting
Had it not been for my love of you, I would not have returned
From me to this tyrannical prince.
The greeting of this unjust ruler.

والنفيand exile أقتلُdeadliest ماwhat ارىI see منfrom ظالمan oppressor
I placate him for fear of his oppression,
I only pretend to obey him out of fear of his tyranny,
And exile is the deadliest thing I see an oppressor inflict.
While exile is better than living under an oppressor.

روحيmy soul فانthen indeed النفيexile ليسis not بضائميoppressing me
If he would consent to send into exile with me
If only he would be satisfied with exiling me with you,
My soul, then exile would not oppress me.
For exile is no burden for me.

O Hind, you are my soul; should I part from it,
O Hind, you are my soul - if we are parted
The tomb would cry out, welcoming the newcomer.
The tomb will bid welcome to whoever comes to it.

Do not reproach me, for humiliation with love
Do not blame me, for humiliation alongside love
Is an affliction lighter than permanent separation.
Is easier than eternal separation.

Were you not my soul, forth would spring
Had you not been my soul, I would have raised my hand
My hand to strike that ruler's brow.
To strike the forehead of that ruler.

O Hind, life in Lebanon is not
O Hind, living in Lebanon is not pure
Serene, nor is the writer's cradle soft.
Nor is the poet's cradle always gentle.

If you depart, my mount is saddled;
If you leave, my camel is saddled,
And if you stay here, I shall not be safe.
And if you stay, I have no peace.
