Sleep, for all glory lies in this slumber,

amid the windblown sands, beneath the clouds' tears.

If they make the sand a resting place for you,

and spread ostrich feathers for others,

then your lot in life, like its counterpart

    in death, dictates this order.

You were indeed more deserving of that marble,

and others more deserving of this dust.

Rather, you were more deserving of survival,

and we deserved death more than you.

What, then, can be hoped for, now that desolate lie

our homelands, bereft of their noble reformers?

And we live in a generation that loyalty has passed by,

many-colored of face, weak in keeping faith,

quaffing from the goblets of its joys,

in a homeland that suffers while its people are oppressed.

You gave your souls freely for it, yet it did not

bestow upon you a tomb to be raised.

Alas for the waste of souls—your souls—

    in a nation whose morals are sick;

in a nation that walks backward,

as though its eyes were turned anywhere but forward.

News of its butcher strikes it:

he enjoys life, honored in station.

    Jamal Pasha—O sky, bear witness—

dwells in the West, in the shade of peace.

He dwells in the West, honored; so, O

    Lebanon, inscribe—and remember, O Sham—

a crime of the West that shall not be erased

from the East's heart until the Day of Resurrection.
