O spring of Barouk, if you were a lover,

You would do nothing but boil as my blood boils.

And had someone who could teach you love passed before me,

You would not have remained in such ignorance to this day.

Do you not see the willow bending tenderly over you,

Like a lovesick lover intent on seeking union?

Do you not see how it has let down its tresses

Over you, bent by passion, lock upon lock?

Then Barouk answered me: 'If you knew

The secret of love as I do, I would abandon my reproaches.

If you wish to keep love alive, make the meeting

Brief, for prolonged union in love is like killing.

    And turn away from the beloved if his passion grows insistent;

And be cold like me, and go on flowing like me.'
