O little nightingale who left the arak bough desolate,

You plunged deep into separation—where can I see you?

You let us hear plaintive song, and did not

leave behind you anything but your echo.

    أي أديبٍ ليس يبكي بكاك

    You wept every tear in your lifetime;

what writer does not weep as you wept?

Sleep, my beloved; it is a sleep,

a single one, in which you shake off your weariness.

What did you receive from life in

Lebanon, O Fayyad, but your hardship?

You used to sing for the rich, yet never

found your own wealth in that singing.

And you wept when affliction befell him,

yet today I see no rich man who has wept for you.

You melted into verse; had you cast it

in thirst at solid rock, it would have given you drink.

Or had you wished to draw down the full moon of night,

your verse would scarcely have reached it before it came to you.

Those rhymes of yours that journeyed to the Levant

and to Egypt, raising the banner of your intellect,

have settled in both lands, and on

the shoulders of both mountains planted your standard.

lofty Muqattam when it announced your death.

O star of poetry, darkness overwhelmed us

when death's marauder assailed your radiance.

the sky of poetry—would fold us away and fold away your sky.

How many a life is worse than your death,

and many a waking worse than your slumber!

And how many a writer has wished that he

might walk swiftly to the grave behind you!

Sleep, my beloved; you will see no tragedy

such as we see, for which your two eyes would weep.

safe from time's ravages after your departure.
