O cradle of youth, youth keeps no pledge.

Youth has gone; may you be safe, O cradle.

Here is yesterday's child, nurtured in you; what

Has distance left him since parting from you?

    Time has reversed his fortunes,

So his heart—not the lowland—is blackened.

He weeps for the years gone by

There, O cradle, when their dream was honey.

And sorrow for a homeland melts him away,

Whose life's radiance misery has destroyed.

A homeland whose green pasture has withered

For the scouts, and whose watering place has grown murky.

And humiliation has walked across its flanks,

    Strutting, and glory turned aside.

Promises are its food and drink.

Alas for a people whose sustenance is promises!

O cradle, remembrance is of no use:

Neither Hind nor Da‘d will return.

Our past and present are opposites,

And one opposite reveals the other's beauty.

What have I to do with memory? Folded away are

Those passing moments, and that age is over.

So let solace in the noble suffice, even if

The noble among us are few whenever they are counted.

This is a gathering that has brought them together,

As a peerless necklace—how splendid the necklace!

For they are those without whose kindness

A grave would have engulfed chivalry and generosity.

O cradle, enough for you that most of them

Were raised in your embrace, O cradle,

For pride: you have reared none but a youth

Whose wood is unyielding in adversity,

Who cherishes the beloved homeland, and never

Does his strength falter before a great ordeal.

So ask the lands of emigration about his virtues:

Praise will waft fragrantly to you from the world.

O garden of the young, may you never cease

Watering your supple branches with dew.

And may God's eye keep watch over you

Forever, and time's misfortunes be repelled.
