I search among lovers, yet I see no
I search among lovers but find none
Love-stricken man, a brother in longing, who rivals me in passion.
Who has a brother hostile towards me out of passion

And I seek a heart as terror-stricken as mine,
And look for a heart as anxious as mine
And an eye like mine, disdaining tears and sleeplessness.
And an eye like mine that disdains tears and wakefulness

And I ask after a fortune as ill-fated as mine,
And ask about a fate as unlucky as mine
Misfortune has held it fast ever since Su‘da was born.
Cursed by misfortune since the day I was created

And I recite poetry freely in Lebanon, but wherever
I turn my gaze there, it shows me a slave.
I turn my gaze in it, it makes me a slave

And I seek poetry like mine in might:
And seek poetry like mine, overpowering
When it colonizes the thickets, it enslaves the lions.
When it conquers rhymes, it enslaves the lion

I search for all this, yet find neither
I search for one who is just like me in everything
A love-stricken man to match me, nor a poet my equal.
A rival or a poet equal to me, but find none

I am content with my glory in rhyme as a distinction,
I'm content with my glory in rhyming which is an asset
But my abasement in love was no glory.
But my glory in love has never been glory

Oh, if only the Rose's Lord had not armed it with thorns
Otherwise, if only God had never created roses.
Or else, if only God had not created the rose at all
