And when I sit beside Thurayya, reciting

my verse, and my outpourings stir her passion,

jealousy toys with my soul over every rhyme

    she repeats amid the sighs.

How strange! I am jealous of my own verse over you, yet

my verse is none other than myself, so my jealousy is of myself.

By God, I have become, from longing and passion

for you, a marvel among the strangest marvels.

Never will I consent to your stirring

except at my hand’s touch or my kisses.

Never will I consent to your admiring

anything but my face, anything but my glances.

Never will I accept that any pleasure should arouse you

save your union with me, of all pleasures.

Poetry is illusion, O Thurayya, and truth

lies in union that sates desires.
