طَرَقَ الخَيالُ فَمَرحَباً سَهلا

طَرَقَ الخَيالُ فَمَرحَباً سَهلا

بخيالِ مَن أَهدَى لنا الوَصلا

بخيالِ مَن أَهدَى لنا الوَصلا

The apparition came by night—a warm welcome

Imagination knocked, so welcome, easy path,

To the apparition of the one who bestowed union on us.

To the imagination of one who gifted us connection.

وسَرى إِليَّ وَدونَ مَنزِلِهِ

وسَرى إِليَّ وَدونَ مَنزِلِهِ

خَمسٌ دَوائمُ تُعمِلُ الإِبِلا

خَمسٌ دَوائمُ تُعمِلُ الإِبِلا

It traveled by night to me, though between me and its dwelling lay

And it flowed to me, and before its destination,

Five unremitting nights that set the camels to toil.

Were five constants working the camels.

يَا حَبَّذا مَن زَار مُعتَسِفاً

يَا حَبَّذا مَن زَار مُعتَسِفاً

حَزنَ البِلادِ إِليَّ والسَّهلا

حَزنَ البِلادِ إِليَّ والسَّهلا

Ah, how dear the one who visited, venturing without a path

O how wonderful is one who visits distressed,

Across the land's rough ground and smooth to reach me.

The sorrow of the country to me and the plains,

حَتَّى أَلَمَّ بِنَا فَبِتُّ بِهِ

حَتَّى أَلَمَّ بِنَا فَبِتُّ بِهِ

أَغنَى الخَلائِقَ كُلِّهم شَملا

أَغنَى الخَلائِقَ كُلِّهم شَملا

Until it came to us, and with it I spent the night

Until he stayed with us, so I spend the night with him,

Richest of all creatures in companionship.

The richest of all creations, perfect inclusion.

يا حَبَّذا هِي حَسبَ قَدك بها

يا حَبَّذا هِي حَسبَ قَدك بها

واللّهِ ما أَبقَيتَ لِي عَقلا

واللّهِ ما أَبقَيتَ لِي عَقلا

Ah, how delightful she is! Enough—she is all you need!

O how wonderful - it is enough - your height with it,

By God, you have left me bereft of reason.

By Allah, you left me no sanity.

واللَّهِ مالي عَنكِ مُنصَرَفٌ

واللَّهِ مالي عَنكِ مُنصَرَفٌ

إِلاَّ إِلَيكِ فَأَجملي الفِعلا

إِلاَّ إِلَيكِ فَأَجملي الفِعلا

By God, I have no turning away from you

By Allah, I have no diversion from you,

Except toward you—so be gracious in your conduct.

Except to you, so beautify the deed.
