Your people are in al-Ghawr, O Buthayn, and ours

in al-Abraqayn—where, then, where is the meeting place?

The place of meeting is far; if there came by night to visit me

the phantom of your image, the dread of the ascent would turn it back.

How often I watched lightning from you whose rain failed to come,

before separation, and held a hope that came to nothing.

Why, then, should I grieve at parting, when I

surely find it more merciful to hearts, and gentler?
