عَلامَwhy ياO دهرُTime بالعُدوَانِwith injustice تَحبِسُنيyou imprison me
عَلامَ يا دهرُ بالعُدوَانِ تَحبِسُني
فيamong غيرِother than جِنْسِيmy kind وَلمand not أُفقَدْI am lost ولمand not أَغِبِI am absent
في غيرِ جِنْسِي وَلم أُفقَدْ ولم أَغِبِ
Why, O Time, do you unjustly imprison me
Why, O Fate, do you unjustly detain me
Among those not of my kind, though I have neither been lost nor been absent?
Among those not of my kind, though I am neither lost nor gone?
هَلاّwhy not بأَدنَىwith the lesser العذَابَيْنِthe two torments اقتَنَعْتَyou were content لنَاfor us
هَلاّ بأَدنَى العذَابَيْنِ اقتَنَعْتَ لنَا
فالذَّبحُfor slaughter أَرْوَحُmore restful منthan تَعذيبِtormenting مُغتَرِبِan exile
فالذَّبحُ أَرْوَحُ من تَعذيبِ مُغتَرِبِ
Why were you not content with the lesser of the two torments for us?
Would you not be content to inflict the least of torments upon us?
For slaughter brings more relief than tormenting an exile.
For slaughter would be more merciful than the agony of exile.
