ونظَّمَ الدُّرَّ بين الرّاحِ والحَبَبِ
Who adorned the moist daisies with the cool sweetness of teeth,
and strung pearls between wine and bubbles?

شمساً تردّتْ ديَاجي الشَّعر في كُثُبِ
And who, I wonder, planted boughs bearing
a sun robed in the deep darkness of hair piled in heaps?

And say to a fawn among the covert's gazelles: 'Now,
look at the charms in the Arabs' fawn.'

The fire of modesty on his cheeks, without a flame,
has mingled with beauty's unspilled water.

Glory to the Shaper of arrows from his sidelong glances—
arrows of beauty, not arrows shot at random.

When they shoot, nothing stands before the hearts, even if
guarded—neither protecting shields nor veils.

عَنِّي سبيلَ النُّهَى والرّشدِ من أَرَبي
Beauty was—while the dark shadows of youth's night hid
from me the path of reason and right guidance—one of my desires.

I would defy counsel concerning it, making no apology,
and ride into error deliberately, unashamed,

and bear rancor in my passion for it, and deem
bearing passion more becoming to me than the dignity of forbearance.
