Whenever day dispels night with its light,

a pitch-black, still night follows it.

Why, then, do I see that, once the night of youth has passed

and the day of gray hair has come, it never returns?

She saw the whiteness of my hair-partings, then said, 'To God we belong and to Him we return,'

in sorrow, and said, 'Where is that black hair?'

I said, 'It has vanished.' Then she lowered her head and breathed

a sigh sent upward by a heart aflame.

She said, 'Is there, then, an appointed time for our meeting?

For I see the harbinger of parting.' I said, 'The appointed time.'
