What do the carefree find strange in my grief?
My friends do not deny my determination
Neither my distress nor my endurance helps me.
Neither my courage nor my patience.

My patience betrayed me; dried up, after the parting of the
My endurance has been betrayed and after intention
loved ones, were my tears—once among my resources.
My teardrops joined my beloved's count.

And whenever my vitals were set ablaze at the remembrance
And whenever the fires of remembrance were kindled
of them, I groaned, then said, 'Enough for me!'
I sighed, then said "enough of my self-pity!"

Had my chest sparked after them
the hollows of my breast, I would not say, 'Woe to you! Enough for me!'
I wouldn't have said "poor me!" to my ashes.

O our loved ones! A call through which I would feel,
My loved ones, I feel a yearning for them
if it reached your ears, coolness upon my liver.
If you heard it, it would chill your liver.

Ah for my life—how blissful it was,
Alas for my life, it knew no comfort
near you, with time obedient to my hand!
In your company when time was at my command.

In the days when my draught from the water of your faces
The days of my visits, from the water of your faces
was sweet, yet my heart remained thirsty after drinking.
Were sweet, though after the visits my heart panged.

Then separation parted us—oh, my thirst
Destiny separated us, so I have craved
to sip wine from hail-white teeth!
A sip of brandy for my pain and fever.

Not to blame me, for all disloyalty stems from my misfortune.

Shed with me a tear of resignation, in solace
aid of one weeping a tear of anguish.
For one who weeps in resignation.
