What alarms you in my passion and my unrest,

or what troubles you in my streaming eyelids?

May you enjoy your freedom from my disease and sickness,

and your eyelids' sleep, heedless of my worry and sleeplessness.

If you thought that love's watering place

was easy to reach, then you are deluded by it—so taste it,

so you may deem it right to blame me, or so I may be given leeway

by your sound judgment for my ignorance and rashness.

Do not think what you used to hear of love

from a pretender and fabricator holds for one who suffers it.

This is love, not the love of the two Qayses; they both

lived long, while this threatens the life I have left.

If I survive, afflicted as I am, then say: 'A man

among the dead, yet living on for misery.'

And if death comes to me, bringing me rest,

then what a debt of gratitude to death will hang upon my neck!

Nor do I complain of my endurance in calamity,

nor is my heart fluttering or fretful.

But I complain only of Time, which burdens me with

what I cannot bear, acting like one powerful and enraged.

It terrifies me each day with parting; and how

can my patience last amid terrors and dread?

So I never set out in the morning with my circle scattered

without returning in the evening with grief undispersed.

Nor have I smiled, showing my foes fortitude,

without being torn apart by fury and rage.

And I have grown weary of life through my separation from

a radiant, splendid man, open-handed and devout.
