وليس على ربع عفا بمعول

They say, “You have wailed over the dwelling enough.”

They say, 'You have wailed enough over the dwelling,

But I am not wailing over an effaced encampment.

And weeping over an effaced dwelling is of no avail.

وكم قدر ما تبقي الدّموع إذا جرت

وكم قدر ما تبقي الدّموع إذا جرت

على كل ربع أو على كل منزل

على كل ربع أو على كل منزل

What reserve could tears leave, once they flow

And how much do tears leave behind when they flow

over every encampment, or over every home?

Over every dwelling-site, or over every abode?'

فقلت نعم هذي ديار عهدتها

فقلت نعم هذي ديار عهدتها

عرين أسود في الخطوب ومعقلي

عرين أسود في الخطوب ومعقلي

I said, “Yes—these are dwellings I once knew

I said, 'Yes, these are dwellings I once knew

as a lions’ den amid calamities, and a stronghold.”

As a den of lions in adversity, and my stronghold.

فقد أصبحت قفرا وفرق شملهم

فقد أصبحت قفرا وفرق شملهم

حوادث دهر بالفراق موكل

حوادث دهر بالفراق موكل

Now they lie desolate, their fellowship scattered

For they have become desolate, and their company was scattered

by vicissitudes of a Time bent on sundering.

By the calamities of an age charged with separation.

سأبكيهم أو يمزج الدم أدمعي

سأبكيهم أو يمزج الدم أدمعي

فهل سمطا كالجمان المفصل

فهل سمطا كالجمان المفصل

I shall weep for them until blood mingles with my tears—

I shall weep for them until blood mingles with my tears,

would the two then form a strand like pearls set bead from bead?

And streams in a strand like pearls spaced apart.'
