هذي ديار بني أبي ومعاشري

هذي ديار بني أبي ومعاشري

قفر عليها وحشة وظلام

These are the dwellings of my father's sons and my companions;

These are the abodes of my kith and kin

Desolate, with loneliness and darkness upon them.

Desolate, forlorn in gloom and loneliness

درست محافظة لهم وتوحشت

درست محافظة لهم وتوحشت

من بعدهم وتعفت الأعلام

من بعدهم وتعفت الأعلام

They have fallen into ruin, keeping faith with them, and grown desolate

I studied their dwellings and yearned for them

After their departure, and the landmarks have been effaced.

After their departure, their signs effaced

فإذا مررت بها فقل متمثلا

فإذا مررت بها فقل متمثلا

يا دار ما صنعت بك الأيام

يا دار ما صنعت بك الأيام

So when you pass by them, say, quoting a verse:

If you pass them by, recite in verse

O dwelling, what have the days done to you?

O home, what has time wrought upon thee
