عَلىupon عَرَصاتِthe open grounds of الدّارِthe dwelling بالجَمرِwith embers مُحْتَذيshod
O you who blame me for standing like one seeking refuge,
O you who blame me for pausing
on the dwelling's open grounds, shod with embers,
At the ruins of the house with embers smoldering
أُقَلِّبُI turn فيin عِرْفانِهاrecognizing it النّاظِرَthe eye القذِيgrit-irritated
لعمْرُكِby your life إنَّindeed البيتَthe house بالظاهرِat al-Zahir الذيthat
I turn my grit-sore eye about, seeking to recognize it.
I search my memories of it with a wistful gaze
By your life, the house at al-Zahir that
By your life! It is the house outwardly that
مررتُI passed by فلمand did not أُلْمِمْstop briefly بِهat it ليَto me شائِقُstirring longing
يُراجِعُresumes قلبيmy heart عندَupon رُؤْياهseeing it جَهْلَهُits folly
I passed but did not visit fills me with longing.
I passed by, but did not speak to anyone within
My heart resumes its folly when it sees it,
It brings my heart back to relive its sorrows and joys
ويركبُand undertakes صعبَthe hard part of الأمرِthe affair فيهthere وسهلَهُand its easy part
ويَسْفَحُand pours forth فيهthere مَدْمَعيmy tearful eye مُسْتَهِلَّهُits streaming tears
and there takes on the affair's hard and easy parts;
And takes on the difficulty and ease within it
and there my eye pours forth its streaming tears.
My overflowing tears descend upon it
وإنّand indeed مُروريmy passing by لاnot أكلِّمI speak to أهلهُits people
أشدَّharsher مِنthan الموتِdeath الذيthat أَناI ذائِقُshall taste
And indeed, my passing by without speaking to its people
Though as I pass, I do not speak to its people
is harsher than the death that I shall taste.
More intensely than the death I will surely taste
وفيand in ذلكَthat البيتِhouse الذيwhich أَتَعَزَّلُI keep away from

حِذارَfor fear of وُشاةِthe talebearers of الحيِّthe tribe أدماءُa pale doe مُغْزِلُwith a fawn
And in that house, from which I keep away
And in that house where I seclude myself
for fear of the tribe's talebearers, dwells a pale doe with a fawn.
Beware of the spies among the living, whose blood stains the spindle
يَجِدُّis earnest هواهاlove for her بالنفوسِwith souls وتَهْزِلُand she jests

Love for her is earnest with souls, while she jests.
As their passions run wild and joke around
And at the valley bend in upper al-Junayna stands a dwelling,
At the edge of the enclosure, aloft among the branches, is a dwelling
فسيحٌspacious شجاthe sorrow of صدريmy breast بِهِwithin it متضايِقُcramped

سأُعْلِنُI shall proclaim والمصدورُand one sick in the chest لاno بدَّescape يَنْفُثُcoughs forth
spacious, yet my breast's sorrow is cramped within it.
Spacious, that squeezed my chest and left me anguished
I shall proclaim—for one sick in the chest must cough forth—
I will declare it, what is destined must gush forth
ضَمانَةَthe sickness of حُبٍّlove بالجَوانِهِat the ribs تَضْبِثُgrips

يُقاسِمُنيswears to me صبريmy patience عليهاconcerning it ويَحْنَثُand breaks its oath
the sickness of a love that grips the ribs.
The guarantee of love flows from my sides
My patience swears to me to bear it, then breaks its oath.
Sharing my patience over her, though it falters
وماذاand what عَسىmight الواشونthe talebearers أَنْto يَتَحدَّثواsay

And what might the talebearers possibly say
What more can the spies say
except that I am in love with you?
Other than I am her lover, smitten

كَماas كانused to يهوَىlove قيسُQays لُبنىLubna وتَوْبَةُand Tawba
A chaste passion, untainted by suspicion,
A passion in chastity, untainted by any doubt
as Qays loved Lubna, and as Tawba loved.
As Qays loved Lubna, and Tawba
أَقولُI say وللواشيand the talebearer has سهامٌarrows مُصيبةُthat strike true

أَجَلْyes صَدَقَspoke truly الواشونَthe talebearers أنتِyou حبيبةٌbeloved
I say, though the talebearer has arrows that strike true:
I say this, though the spies' arrows strike true
Yes, the talebearers spoke truly: you are beloved
Indeed, the spies spoke true, you are my beloved

سأخصعُI shall bow للطيفِto the dream-vision الملمِّthat visits بعَتْبِكمْwith your reproaches
to me, though your ways have not been kind.
Though you do not possess praiseworthy traits
I shall bow to the dream-vision that visits with your reproaches,
I will submit to the Gentle One, patient with your blame
وأُلْصِقُand I press خدّيmy cheek فيin الدّيارِthe dwellings بتُرْبِكُمْagainst your dust

and press my cheek to your dust among the dwellings.
And press my cheek to the soil of your abode
And always, whether you are far away or near,
I remain still, hoping for your nearness and acceptance

كماas ضمَّjoined أطرافthe edges of القميصِthe shirt البَنائِقُthe gussets
night gathers around me the limbs of love for you,
The night wraps me in the garment of your love
as gussets join together the edges of a shirt.
As though the edges of the shirt envelop me
هيit is الدّارُthe dwelling مَنْwho ليfor me أَنْto أسوفَI smell تُرابَهاits dust

It is the dwelling—who will let me smell its dust,
This is the house - who can I complain to of its soil?
and weep for our nights there and how they changed,
And weep for our nights within it and its changes
وسُمْراًand tawny lances بهاthere تحميbar الأعاديthe enemies قِبابَهاher tents
كأنَّas though علىupon أنيابِهاher canine teeth الخمرَwine شابَهاhe mixed it
and the tawny lances there that bar foes from her tents?
Passing evenings in it sheltering enemies under its ceiling
As though upon her teeth lay wine, mingled
As if its fangs once held wine that aged it

with dew-water from the night's last hours by an evening drinker.
With the dew's water from late night, most dense
They have gone far—may their chosen course bring them near, may it!—
They left, and perhaps kind intentions will bring them close
بشمسٍwith a sun تردّتrobed herself فيat الظّهيرةِnoon حِنْدِساpitch-darkness
كَأَنّas though بِفيهاin her mouth الروضَthe garden ليلاًby night تنفّساhad breathed
with a sun that robed herself in pitch-darkness at noon,
Like a sun that lingered in the afternoon shadows
as though a garden had breathed by night within her mouth.
As if the meadow breathed in the night air

كَماas شيمَwas watched منfrom أعْلَىthe top of السّحابِةthe cloud بارِقُa lightning-flash
And I tasted it only with my eye, gazing intently,
I have not tasted it except with my eyes keeping watch
as a lightning-flash from a cloud's summit is watched.
Like lightning flashing from the highest clouds
