يَضيقُ بمثِله ذَرعُ الصّبُورِ
O Shams al-Dawla, hear the outpouring of a longing
O you who brings sunlight to the state, hear my fervent longing
whose like strains the endurance of the patient.
The like of which tries the patience of the most forbearing
لقدindeed أوحَشْتَyou have made desolate دُنياa world كُنتَyou were أُنسِيmy solace

You have indeed made desolate a world—you were my solace
You have made the world I took comfort in desolate
within it—and robbed me of joy's abundance.
And deprived me of the joy of happiness

إذا ما الشّمسُ لم تظهرْ بأرضٍ
فماthen what طيبُsweetness الحياةِof life بغيرِwithout نُورِlight
فما طيبُ الحياةِ بغيرِ نُورِ
If the sun does not appear in a land,
If the sun does not rise in a land
then what sweetness is there in life without light?
Then life lacks goodness without its light

And though you have come to dwell in my mind,
And if you come to stay in my heart
in that place within my inner self where my thought roams.
Where my thoughts wander in my conscience
