أيَا نَازِحاً لم أحتَسِبْ بُعدَ دَارِهِ

أيَا نَازِحاً لم أحتَسِبْ بُعدَ دَارِهِ

وقَد كان لو نِلتُ المُنَى قُرْبُه حَسبْي

وقَد كان لو نِلتُ المُنَى قُرْبُه حَسبْي

O distant one, whose home's remoteness I had not foreseen,

O displaced one, I had not yet accounted for his house

And indeed, had I attained my wishes, his nearness would have sufficed me.

And if I had attained death, its proximity would have sufficed me

تَعَرّضَتِ الأخطارُ دُون لِقَائِنَا

تَعَرّضَتِ الأخطارُ دُون لِقَائِنَا

وصَدَّ التّنَائي عن مُواصَلِة الكُتْبِ

وصَدَّ التّنَائي عن مُواصَلِة الكُتْبِ

Dangers stood in the way of our meeting,

Dangers came between our meeting

And separation prevented continued correspondence.

And distance prevented the continuation of letters

وقد صَارَ يأْتِي بعد حَوْلٍ مُجرَّمٍ

وقد صَارَ يأْتِي بعد حَوْلٍ مُجرَّمٍ

كتابُكَ مَقصوراً على اللّوم والعَتْبِ

كتابُكَ مَقصوراً على اللّوم والعَتْبِ

And now, after a whole year has elapsed, there comes

And after a long absence

your letter, confined to blame and reproach.

Your letter comes only with blame and reproach

فيا أُنْسَ قَلبي لا تَزِدنيَ وَحْشَةً

فيا أُنْسَ قَلبي لا تَزِدنيَ وَحْشَةً

ويا رَوْحَ كَربي لا تكُن سَبَبَ الكَرْبِ

ويا رَوْحَ كَربي لا تكُن سَبَبَ الكَرْبِ

So, O solace of my heart, do not add to my loneliness,

So O comfort of my heart, do not increase my loneliness

And O relief of my distress, do not be the cause of distress.

And O spirit of my distress, do not be the cause of distress
