    ما يستزيرُ الطّيفَ طَرفٌ سَاهرُ

    No wonder if the visiting phantom has forsaken me;

    a sleepless eye cannot summon a dream-phantom.

Between me and sleep stand anxious thoughts that have driven it

from my eye; it is shy and quick to flee.

Neither red wine's heady rush dispels my care, nor

does a night companion divert my heart when he calls.

And when I seek refuge in hopes, I am turned back

by despair that treacherous time confirms.

I seek the days' compassion, though they turn away,

and reproach them, obstinate and unjust as they are.

    وَلَقَلّمَا يُشكِي الظّلومُ القَادِرُ

    And complaining to them increases their harshness;

and rarely indeed does a powerful oppressor grant redress.

I complain of wounds in my heart that defeat the

healer; no examiner has reached their depths.

They have lingered, festering within; and separation's terrors

strip the scabs from what bygone time had healed.

And on the riding camels—if tears would allow me

a glance toward those curtained litters—are young antelopes.

They bore away the heart of one captive to grief after their departure,

restlessly looking about—he stays behind, yet journeys.

May my tears run dry at the dwellings, and may

my patience return and fugitive sleep revisit me,

if I do not pour over them clouds of tears

before which the morning clouds scatter in fear.

Shall I burden the ruins with a raincloud's favor,

while the cloud of my tears is pouring rain?

Then I would indeed be miserly with my eye's tear ducts,

and faithless to the covenant with those who lived in the dwellings.
