مرورthe passage of دهرtime خائنtreacherous خابلenfeebling
My stride was shortened and my spear-straight frame bent
My footsteps faltered as I ascended,
by the passage of treacherous, enfeebling time.
The passing of treacherous time has failed.

And my palm became the staff's familiar resting place,
And my hand became accustomed to the staff,
after bearing the brown, slender lance.
After carrying the withered dark one.

عصايmy staff مشيthe gait of الصائدthe hunter الخائلthe watchful one (literally, conjecturing)
I walk, weak and stooping, leaning on
I walk with weakness and bent over,
my staff, with a watchful hunter's gait.
Like the defeated hunter’s walk with his staff.
كأننيas though I لمdid not أمشI walk يومthe day of الوغىbattle
إلىtoward نزالcombat with البطلthe champion الباسلthe valiant
As though I had never walked on the day of battle
As if I did not walk on the day of battle,
to face the valiant champion in combat,
To the fight of the brave hero.

منof الردىdeath كالقدرlike fate النازلdescending
nor cleaved through the army, unafraid
And I did not pierce through the army, fearing no harm,
of death, like fate descending.
Like impending fate.

منfrom طولهits length لمdid not أحظI gain بالطائلwith anything worthwhile
So look at what life has done to me:
So look what time has done to me,
from its long span I gained nothing worthwhile.
Despite its length, I gained no advantage.
ياO حسرتاmy sorrow! إنيindeed I غداtomorrow ميتdestined to die
علىon فراشيmy bed ميتةthe death of الخاملthe obscure man
Alas! Tomorrow I shall die
Oh what sorrow! Tomorrow I will be dead,
on my bed, the death of an obscure man.
Lifeless on my bed, a dormant death.
هلاwhy not أتانيcame to me الموتdeath يومthe day of الوغىbattle
بينamid القناthe lances والأسلand the spears الناهلthe blood-drinking
Why did death not come to me on the day of battle,
If only death had come on the day of battle,
amid the lances and blood-drinking spears?
Between the spear and the unsheathed sword.
