My protecting host—to him I flee from calamity,
My tribe comes to him out of fear
and my reserve, should a ghoul ravage my wealth.
And my provisions, if scarce, become plentiful

Through his eminence I rise, and from the surplus of what he has
His kingdom is sublime and from the excess of what he bestows
bestowed, I fulfill nobility's duty and give to others.
I fulfill the duty of exaltation and attain it

A king who remembers promises and the covenant,
A king who remembers his promises and covenants
while his generosity makes him forget what he bestows.
While his favors make him forget what he attains

And an obscure man rose high, and a coward fought in defense;
While the indolent became active and the coward brave
and a traitor kept faith, and a miser gave freely.
The betrayer loyal and the stingy generous

You defended the lands with the sword, so unyielding
You have protected the lands with the sword so the easy became difficult
became what was yielding there, and the abased grew mighty.
And the humiliated became dignified

And through warfare you divided the Franks into two halves:
You have divided the Franks in two by conquest
this one a captive, and that one slain.
So this one is moaning while the other lies dead

Fear has imagined before his eyes hosts against you
