صَبريmy patience علىat فَقدِthe loss of إخوانيmy brothers وفُرْقَتِهمْand their parting
غَدْرٌbetrayal وأجملُand more befitting بيfor me منthan صَبريَmy patience الجَزعُanguish
My patience at losing my brothers and being parted from them
is betrayal; anguish befits me more than patience.
تَقاسَمَتْهُمshared them among themselves نَوىًseparation شطَّتwent far away بهمwith them وردىًand death
فالحيُّso the living one كالمَيْتِlike the dead one ماno فيin قُربِهhis nearness طَمَعُhope
They have been divided between separation that bore them far away and death;
so the living are like the dead: there is no hope of being near them.
وأَصبَحَتْand has become وحشَةُdesolation الغبراءِthe dusty earth دونَهُمُwithout them
منfrom بعدafter أُنسيmy comfort in company بِهِمwith them والشَّملُand the company مُجتمِعُgathered together
And the dusty earth has grown desolate without them,
after my joy in their company, when we were all together.
وعِشتُand I lived منفرداًalone منهمapart from them وأُقسِمُand I swear ماnot
يكادُnearly مُنفردٌone who is alone بالعيشِfrom life يَنتفِعُbenefits
And I have lived alone, apart from them; I swear:
one who is alone can scarcely find joy in life.
