بِنَفْسِي عذولٌ لامَ فيكُمْ فردَّ لي

بِنَفْسِي عذولٌ لامَ فيكُمْ فردَّ لي

بذكرِكُم رَوْحَ الحَياةِ عَذُولُ

بذكرِكُم رَوْحَ الحَياةِ عَذُولُ

My life be ransom for a reprover who chided me over you, and so restored to me

life's refreshing breath by mentioning you—that reprover.

لَحَى نَاصِحاً فيكُم فأذكَى صَبَابتي

لَحَى نَاصِحاً فيكُم فأذكَى صَبَابتي

وتُذكِي الرّياحُ النّارَ وهيَ بَليلُ

وتُذكِي الرّياحُ النّارَ وهيَ بَليلُ

He reproached me, offering counsel about you, and so kindled my longing;

and winds kindle fire, though they are cool and moist.

أسُوفُ صَعِيدَ الأرضِ إذ وافق اسمُه

أسُوفُ صَعِيدَ الأرضِ إذ وافق اسمُه

صعيداً به أهلُ الحبيب نُزُولُ

صعيداً به أهلُ الحبيب نُزُولُ

I sniff the earth's soil, since its name matches

Ṣaʿīd, where the beloved's people are staying.

وأغْدُو على أُسْوانَ أَسوانَ في الحَشَا

وأغْدُو على أُسْوانَ أَسوانَ في الحَشَا

لِبْعديَ عَنها لوعَةٌ وغَليلُ

لِبْعديَ عَنها لوعَةٌ وغَليلُ

And I wake sorrowful over Aswan; in my heart,

because I am far from her, are anguish and burning thirst.
