مالِيmy wealth أبَىrefused لِيfor me أنthat أُعَدَّI be counted بِخَيلاَmiserly
My generosity with what I possess, despite the blows to
my wealth, has kept me from being counted a miser.
أَهَبُI give الكَثيرَmuch منfrom الكثيرِplenty فإنand if لَحَتْthey stripped bare
عُوديmy branch وهَبتُI gave منfrom القَلِيلِlittle قَليلاَa little
I give much from plenty; and if they strip
my branch bare, I give a little from little,
كَيso that لاnot أُكذِّبَI disappoint فيin رجَائيhope in me آملاًone who hopes
إنّindeed البخيلَthe miser يُكذِّبُbelies التأميلاَhope
so as not to disappoint anyone who places his hopes in me;
for the miser gives the lie to hope.
