دَعُونِيlet me أَبُحْI speak openly مَاnot مِثلُthe like of وَجْدِيَmy grief يُجحَدُis denied
عَسىperhaps جَمراتٌembers فيin الجوانِحِthe ribs تخمدُdie out
Let me speak openly; grief like mine cannot be denied.
Let me express what my passion conceals
Perhaps the embers within my ribs will die out.
Perhaps the embers in my soul it shields
أُجَشِّمُI burden نَفسيmyself كَتْمَconcealing ماwhat أَناI كاظِمٌholding back
عَليهِover it وماand not ليfor me بالّذِيregarding what رُمتُهُI sought it يَدُpower
I burden myself with concealing what I hold back,
I veil my agony, though it's no use
Yet I have no power to achieve what I sought.
To feel this way for one I can't accuse
ووجديand my grief بمَنfor those whom فارقتُI parted from لولاwere it not for تجلُّديmy fortitude
وماand what قَدْرُthe measure of ماwhat يُجدِيavails عليَّfor me التَّجَلُّدُfortitude
And my grief for those I parted from, but for my fortitude
If not for my patience we would have stayed
—and how much does fortitude avail me?—
But no restraint my longing could evade
كوجدِlike the grief of لبيدٍLabid أَوor كَوجدِlike the grief of مُتَمِّمٍMutammim
ومَنand who مالِكٌMalik مَعbeside منthose whom فقدتُI lost وأَربَدُand Arbad
would be like Labid’s grief, or like Mutammim’s.
A yearning like Labid's burns me inside
And who are Malik and Arbad beside those I have lost?
I shiver for one I lost, reason defied
