Leave me be: your tears cannot turn me from my purpose.

Nor do fair, wide-eyed women hold my reins.

Do not be distraught by sudden parting; be patient.

    Perhaps separation will bring reunion.

Nor fret over my exile, for I have always been

a stranger among men for my loyalty and eloquence—

faithful even when an eyelid betrays an eye,

and a hand fails to honor its bond with its fingers.

For lions have thickets wherever they settle; only

    a coward's heart fears separation.

Do not ask me how Time treats me, for I

keep my tongue above complaining of calamities.

But ask Time about me, for it

will tell of my endurance through the turns of fate.

The nights pelted me with calamities, ignorant

of my endurance under all that befell and beset me.

Yet calamities have not weakened my bones, nor have they

power against my steadfast endurance when disaster strikes.

How many a calamity my enemies thought would be my doom

has lifted me high and exalted my standing among mankind!

I am not one to submit to misfortune,

nor does dreaded horror fill my heart.

Though Time has consumed my wealth, it has not consumed

the praise I receive or my renown in every place.

It was only for giving and hospitality,

and relief for the distressed, and ransom for a captive.

I was praised in both prosperity and hardship,

and excelled on the day of bounty and the day of spear-fighting.

I have stored up nothing against Time, should it strike or turn hostile,

or against calamity, save my keen sword and spearhead.

For a good name endures for those who bear it,

and everything upon the earth shall perish.
