Is there no judge in love who judges justly?

Nor anyone to restrain or reproach?

Nor anyone to free the captives of passion

and longing from the weight of what they were made to bear?

Nor a fair-minded man who knows that

if he speaks from conjecture, he is deemed ignorant?

If he does not know what befalls

the man of longing through his illness, let him ask,

so he may learn that passion's arrows

    kill before they strike.

And that tears, whenever they are shed,

stir up a blazing fire within the breast.

And if he says, 'They are water,' say:

'You speak truly; yet some water puts out eyes.'

Wretched are the people of love: they have no

    protector, nor any refuge.

Nor anyone to pity them and seek to preserve

the blessing of being spared what they suffer.

    Their slain have no slayer,

and their wronged are forever left unaided.

And their avowal of love brings disgrace,

and death; their concealment is deadlier still.

And if they deny love for fear of talebearers,

    streaming tears confess it.

And in their sickness—should they deny

their yearning—lies its explanation in brief.

And each of them is submissive, yielding

    to injustice, or distraught, wailing.

And their life is toil, all of it,

and in death they find their rest.

My soul be the ransom of one obsessed with spurning,

who possesses beauty, yet shows no kindness.

My madness for him is forever growing,

and my passion's past is still to come.

Beautiful by the consensus of all mankind,

his lovers and the reproachers alike.

One of the houris, whose Riḍwān is his stinginess,

and his saliva is cool and sweet-flowing.

And I have not tasted it; yet the eyes—

    their testimony is always accepted.

    He begrudges my eye sleep,

yet I do not withhold it from him.

My sickness is a trifle to him,

and my plight is cast aside, neglected.

He sees me, from love of him, in the throes

of death, yet cares nothing for what ails me.

I reproach him, but he does not desist,

and I admonish him, but he does not accept it.

So I have no hope of union,

    nor can I endure estrangement.

Nor is there tenderness in him to hope for,

and all my affliction through him is baffling.

And from my intoxication with love of him I never sober

up, so as to know what I am doing.

And now I ask God's forgiveness for

my words, for I speak them in jest.

And I have no experience of love,

nor does it distract me from lofty pursuits.

But, as the Lord of His servants has said

of us, we speak, but do not act.
