فإنfor indeed الثمانينeighty years استعادتhave reclaimed قوىthe strength رجليmy legs
فإن الثمانين استعادت قوى رجلي
I want a staff of ebony to support me,
I want a staff of elderwood to support me
For eighty years have reclaimed the strength of my legs.
For eight decades have sapped the strength of my legs
ولوand even if بعصاwith a staff موسىMoses اتقيتI steadied myself لآدهاwould surely burden it
ولو بعصا موسى اتقيت لآدها
علىdespite ماwhat بهاis in it منof قوةstrength حملbearing ثقليmy weight
على ما بها من قوة حمل ثقلي
Even if I steadied myself with Moses’ staff, it would be burdened,
And if with Moses' staff I were equipped
Despite all its strength, by bearing my weight.
I'd lean on it, so mighty to bear my weight

ولكمand how often قدرwas decreed ماwhat ترجىhopes for المناياdeath ولمand has not تملgrown weary
ولكم قدر ما ترجى المنايا ولم تمل
And yet we have entertained hope in vain.
But futile are the wishes we harbor
And how often has what death hopes for been decreed, while death has not grown weary.
And the appointed time cares not what we yearn

When a man reaches eighty, death
When a man reaches his eighties
Whispers to him of departure from beside the saddle.
Death whispers to him to prepare for the journey ahead
