I visit your grave, and grief prevents me

From finding my way when I depart.

For I see nothing but stones laid one upon another

That have enclosed you—and the pearl's home is the shell.

So I turn away, not knowing where to return,

As though I were lost, wandering blindly in the night.

If my life is too short to see a successor

To him, then God's reward is my recompense.

I say to my soul, when longing grows fierce within it:

O soul, alas for you! Where are kin and forebears?

Is this not the path of all creation?

And all acknowledge the coming of death.

How long this grieving, or how long this yearning—and does

Sorrow bring back one whom his grave has enclosed?
