I reproach death: how often I have plunged into it, exposing myself

to it, while it turns away from me and shuns me.

And how often swords have seized me in the clutches of

    death, yet fate remained hidden.

Until I passed eighty, and there ended

the ease of the life for which people long.

And now I seek guidance from my staff, but it sways me

from my course through my weakness, as though I walked askew.

So the dreaded death that souls fear

is more delightful and sweeter than my life, and more pleasant.
