أُطيعُ هَوَى عَصْمَاءَ وهو يُضِلُّنِي

أُطيعُ هَوَى عَصْمَاءَ وهو يُضِلُّنِي

ومَا أنَا فيها للنُّهى بمُطيعِ

ومَا أنَا فيها للنُّهى بمُطيعِ

I obey my passion for ʿAṣmāʾ, though it leads me astray;

I obey the whims of a willful beloved though they lead me astray,

And where she is concerned, I do not obey reason.

Yet in her I heed no reproach, obedient am I.
