حَسْبيenough for me منof العيشِlife كمhow much لاقيتُI encountered فيهِin it أذَىًharm
أقَلُّهُthe least of it فَقدُthe loss of أترابيmy peers وخُلاّنيand my close friends
I have had enough of life—how much pain I have endured in it,
the least of it the loss of my peers and close friends.
لمnot يَبقَremains ليfor me منany مُشْتَكىa confidant بثٍّanguish أحَمِّلُهُI burden him with
همّيmy cares ولاnor مَنْanyone who إذاwhen استصرختُI cried for help لَبّانيanswered me
No confidant for my anguish remains to whom I can entrust
my cares, nor anyone who answers when I cry for help.
وصُمَّand grew deaf عنِّيto me صَدىthe echo صوتيof my voice وأفردَنيand left me alone
ظِلِّيmy shadow وملَّand grew weary الكَرىsleep والطيفُand the dream-vision غِشيانيof visiting me
And my voice’s echo grew deaf to me; I was forsaken
by my shadow; sleep and dream-visions tired of visiting me.
وماand never نظرتُI looked إلىat ماwhat كانused to يُبهِجُنيdelight me
إلاّexcept that شَجانيit saddened me وآسانِيand grieved me وأَبْكانيand made me weep
And never have I looked at what once delighted me
without its saddening me, grieving me, and making me weep.
ناحَتْshe wailed فباحَتso she revealed فيin فُروعِthe branches of البانِthe bān tree

عنof لوعَتيmy anguish وعنand of جَوَىthe burning pain of أحْزانيmy sorrows
She wailed, and in the bān tree’s branches gave voice
to my anguish and the burning pain of my sorrows.

عينٌan eye تجودُgives freely بالنجيعِwith blood القانيdeep crimson
Her two eyes are sparing of tears, while I have
an eye that freely pours out crimson blood.

وُرْقٌgray doves تداعتcalled to one another فيin ذُراthe tops of الأغصانِthe branches
When they call, I answer them in alarm—
gray doves calling to one another in the treetops.

كنتُI was إِذاwhenever دعَوْتُهI called him لبّانيanswered me
And my grief is that time has carried off the one
who would answer me whenever I called him.
