وما أشكُو تلَوُّنَ أهلِ وُدّي

وما أشكُو تلَوُّنَ أهلِ وُدّي

ولو أجْدَتْ شَكَّيتُهم شكوْتُ

ولو أجْدَتْ شَكَّيتُهم شكوْتُ

I do not complain of my friends’ fickleness;

yet if complaining of them availed, I would complain.

مَلِلْتُ عتابَهم ويئستُ منهُم

مَلِلْتُ عتابَهم ويئستُ منهُم

فما أرجوهُمُ فِمين رَجوتُ

فما أرجوهُمُ فِمين رَجوتُ

I have wearied of reproaching them and despaired of them;

so I no longer count them among those in whom I have placed my hopes.

إذا أدْمَتْ قَوارِصُهُم فؤادي

إذا أدْمَتْ قَوارِصُهُم فؤادي

كَظَمتُ على أَذَاهم وانطويْتُ

كَظَمتُ على أَذَاهم وانطويْتُ

When their barbs make my heart bleed,

I swallow my anger at their abuse and withdraw into myself,

ورُحتُ عليهِمُ طَلْقَ المُحَيَّا

ورُحتُ عليهِمُ طَلْقَ المُحَيَّا

كأَنّي ما سمِعتُ ولا رأيتُ

كأَنّي ما سمِعتُ ولا رأيتُ

and go to them with a cheerful face,

as though I had neither heard nor seen.

تجنَّوْا لِي ذُنوباً ما جنتْها

تجنَّوْا لِي ذُنوباً ما جنتْها

يَدايَ ولا أَمرتُ ولا نَهيتُ

يَدايَ ولا أَمرتُ ولا نَهيتُ

They falsely charged me with sins never committed

by my hands; I neither commanded nor forbade.

ولا واللّهِ ما أضمرتُ غدْراً

ولا واللّهِ ما أضمرتُ غدْراً

كما قد أظهَروهُ ولا نَويتُ

كما قد أظهَروهُ ولا نَويتُ

No, by God, I have harbored no treachery

such as they have shown, nor have I intended any.

ويومُ الحشرِ موعدُنا وتَبدُو

ويومُ الحشرِ موعدُنا وتَبدُو

صحيفةُ ما جنَوْهُ وما جنيتُ

صحيفةُ ما جنَوْهُ وما جنيتُ

And the Day of Gathering is our appointed meeting, and there will appear

the record of what they have committed and what I have committed.
