إلىuntil كَمhow long أُعَنَّىI am wearied بالسُّرىby night travel والسّباسِبِand barren plains
ويُصدَعُand is shattered شَمليmy fellowship بالنَّوَىby separation والنّوائِبِand calamities
How long must I be wearied by night journeys and barren plains?
For how long must I be distressed by exile and calamities
And my fellowship be shattered by separation and calamities?
As my ties are constantly severed by malice and misfortunes
فمَنso whoever لاقَهُsuited him يوماًone day منof الدّهرِtime منزِلٌa dwelling
فماthen not مَنزليmy dwelling إلاexcept ظهورُthe backs النَجائِبِfine-bred camels
If ever a dwelling has suited anyone in his lifetime,
So whoever meets time’s adversity at any point
My dwelling is nothing but the backs of fine-bred camels.
My only shelter becomes enduring tribulations
ومنand whoever رَاقَهpleased him خِلٌّa dear friend يُسَرُّhe is gladdened بِقُربِهِby his nearness
فياthen O ويحَalas for قلبيmy heart منbecause of فِراقparting from الأقَارِبِkinsfolk
And if anyone delights in a dear friend, glad to be near him,
And whoever enjoys the company of a dear friend
Then alas for my heart at parting from kin!
Alas my heart, separated from loved ones
فليso I have كلَّevery يومٍday منfrom جَوىburning anguish الهمِّsorrow صاحبٌa companion
يُجدِّدُrenews أحزانيmy sorrows علىover فَقدِthe loss of صاحبِa friend
So each day, sorrow's burning anguish is my companion,
Thus each day I have a companion in the heat of worries
Renewing my sorrows over the loss of a friend.
Renewing my sorrows over the loss of a companion
وليand I have منزلٌa dwelling مَاnot مَسَّtouched جلدِيmy skin تُرَابهُits dust
ولاnor فيهin it أتْرابيmy peers ومَلْهَىand a place of amusement مَلاعبيmy games
And I have a dwelling whose dust has never touched my skin,
I have an abode whose soil has never touched my skin
Nor are my peers there, nor a place for my games.
Containing neither my peers nor the joys of my playgrounds
