How can I forget you, Abu Bakr, or how

can I endure? My patience over you is not serene.

Wherever I turn, you are in the dark cores of my

eye and heart, portrayed there, never departing.

And why this grief, when we are like travelers:

some of us on the road, and some encamped?

The first have camped for the night, and the last, who

follows, will soon come to join them.

And where the earliest forebears have camped

is our appointed meeting, and from there our return.

    وهَل تَسلو مُوَلَّهَةٌ ثَكولُ

    I speak to my soul of finding solace without you;

but can a distraught, bereaved soul find solace?

When I whisper patience to her, she moans in longing,

as a bereaved she-camel moans for a stuffed calfskin.

When she looks at it, she rejects it,

yet yearning and burning anguish draw her back.

Death leaves me with unmistakable despair,

yet the state of my grief does not change.

I long for Abu Bakr, and I have no

way to see him in this world.

So, O God, what unmistakable despair,

whose condition is at odds with serene patience!

A yearning wrestles with me for my reason,

for him—a yearning no minds can overcome.

So it makes me forget the certainty of despair over him,

as wine makes its habitual drinker forget.

The reproacher rebukes me, yet he does not know

the anguish I conceal, this reproacher.

When the carefree man sleeps, my grief settles in for the night,

and inward sorrow keeps my night sleepless.

It is as though the stars of my night were bound fast,

so they never move from their places.

And morning brings me no relief, yet

in it the wasted, ailing man seeks consolation.

No solace suits me in my day,

and in my night, wailing never leaves me.
